Energy Wars: Has OPEC Won?
Date: Monday 8 June 2015 | Time: 2 pm (BST)| Duration: 50 minutes
Guest Speaker: Amrita Sen, Chief Energy Oil Analyst, Energy Aspects
Summary
As part of our “Energy Wars” series we welcome Amrita Sen, a renowned energy consultant to join Nitesh Shah, our in-house commodities specialist, to give a post-OPEC meeting briefing.
As discussed earlier in the series, there is battle of technologies between conventional oil producers, dominated by OPEC and the emerging shale oil producers, mainly from the US. In the past five years, producers in the US with improved technology have reversed over four decades of production decline in the country.
That new global supply has unseated OPEC as the kings of the oil market and they have responded with a ferocious price war, seeing oil prices half in the span of 6 months. While oil prices have recovered 40% from their March lows, the market pins high hopes on an OPEC production cut. We will see whether that is delivered on June 5th. A failure to cut could position OPEC as the battle victors. But can they win the War?
Our upcoming webinar will address the following:
What is the outcome of the June 5th OPEC meeting in Vienna?
Will the US continue to pare back on production?
What does this mean for the supply of oil globally and, ultimately, for the oil price?
